Description:
Article 3-A - SUBURBAN TOWN LAW  Title 4 - TOWN DEPARTMENTS §  53-c.  Terms  of  office.  The head of a department and a deputy department head shall hold office until the first day of January next succeeding the first bi-annual town election held after his appointment, and  thereafter, shall hold office for the term of two years and until his successor shall have qualified,  provided,  however, that the appointees to such offices shall be removable at the pleasure of the town board unless otherwise provided by local law.
Responsibilities:

The Dog Control Officer will be assigned a variety of assignments and will provide excellent dog control services to the community such as enforcing state and local Agricultureal & Market Laws, educating the public about dog care, rescuing sick or injured dogs, and protecting against rabies.

 

Requirements

  • High school diploma (GED) is required.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Must be able to lift up to 100 pounds.
  • Respond to complaints from citizens
  • Track dogs in all environments, at all times of day or night
  • Explain the bylaw to the violators
  • Try to reach an understanding and obtain compliance with the bylaw
  • Enforce bylaws by issuing orders to correct problems
  • Arrange for action to be taken when orders are not followed (removing dogs from homes)
  • Enforce bylaws with tickets, summonses and subpoenas
  • Prepare related legal documents
  • Appear in court and give testimony
  • The typical day will involve listening to complaints from community members, documenting those meetings and following up on the issues. If there is in fact a bylaw violation, dogcontrol officer will take whatever measures necessary to remedy the situation. Some dog control officers patrol public areas, watching for violations. The job permits for work outdoors, as well as travel throughout the community.
Hours of Operation:
Work shifts include early mornings, days, nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call. Initial and continuing education will be provided in animal cruelty investigation, equine management, animal rescue, disaster response, and related topics.
